FORGOTTEN BUT NOT FORGIVEN

Update: To those who are stupid, well I have nothing to say. For your info since you work in NSC yet do not know sports, Chong Wei plays on July 29, and this was checked with BWF. And we have nothing against Pandalela as she earns the right. But why LIE about when Chong Wei is to play and why LIE that OCM made that decision. Go get your FACTS right before hiring cyber troopers. Obviously it's GUTTER personalities that UNDERMINE sports. And Haresh Deol is a man who thinks for himself unlike YOU yang menurut perinatah and stabbed your friend in his back.

That will aptly sum up the position of national badminton star Lee Chong Wei who was obviously snubbed by the National Sports Council as the flag bearer for the London Olympics.

While Pandalela Rinong deserves to be the flag bearer on her own right, one cannot help wonder why Chong Wei, a three time Olympian has been overlooked as the reason offered by National Sports Council Director General Dato Seri Zolkples Embong lacked conviction and above all smacked arrogance.

" We considered both Chong Wei and Pandalela and opted for the diver as Chong Wei has an event two days after the opening," Zolkples retorted when asked why Pandalela was picked.

But when asked if Chong Wei was infact asked if he was willing to carry the national flag, the answer was negative as Zolkples said that they did not ask Chong Wei.

And the man who is being looked at delivering the gold was straightforward in his answer if he was willing to be in the Malaysian contingent to march at the opening.

"This is my third Olympic and since my first match is on July 29, I want to participate in the opening ceremony as I have never had the opportunity, " said Chong Wei.

When told that he was not picked as the flag bearer, Chong Wei looked up and was seemingly calm in his reply though one could not help notice the tinge of sadness in his eyes as he replied;

"That is their decision and what can I say. But I do hope they let me march at the opening and my Olympics will not be complete as I have never been to the opening ceremony be it at Athens (2004) and Beijing (2008).

And this brings up the question, was this payback from NSC for Chong Wei being absent from the National Sports Awards earlier this year which irked Zolkples?

It's obviously a case of tit for tat and in the end the nations most famous athlete has to pay the price.

CHONG WEI - STILL HUNTING FOR TITLES

His aim is to win the nation's elusive gold medal. And Lee Chong Wei has his heart set on being on the podium at the Wembley Arena come August 5, singing the Negaraku, the Malaysian national anthem on the top of his voice.

That is his dream, his childhood ambition, winning the gold medal means more than anything else in the world.

It almost became undone, a freak injury to his ankle almost put paid to his appearance at the London Olympic Games. But he has preserved and despite many writing off his chances, Chong Wei prefers to look at the brightside of life.

"Maybe the injury is a blessing in disguise for it has somewhat eased the pressure. Many are skeptical about my chances at the Olympics. And frankly it does not bother me one bit as I know what it takes to win the elusive gold medal for Malaysia. I intend to put every ounce of effort in order to bag the gold, that is my vow to the fans," said Chong Wei at a media luncheon he hosted at Stadium Juara.

"I am slowly regaining my fitness and form. Though the phobia factor is still at the back of my head, I hope to utilise the next one month to overcome this. More importantly my form is coming back and in terms of preparation lets say that I am at almost 70% of what I am when I am normal. Let us hope that I will continue to progress in rehabilitation and put up a display that will make the nation proud."

Chong Wei said that London will be his last attempt to win honours at the Olympics and has ruled himself out of making another attempt, should he fail, in Brazil in 2016.

"At times we cannot win everything. Not all are fortunate to win major events. For example Peter Gade has yet to win the Olympics, Taufik Hidayat has never won the All England. Only Lin Dan has achieved everything. As for me I will take another shot at the World Championships, Commonwealth Games, Thomas Cup and the Asian Games before calling it quits," conceded Chong Wei.

The world number one also made an impassionate plea to the members of the Malaysian media present at the function which was also attended by BAM Secretary Ng Chin Chai, BAM General Manager Kenny Ng, coaches Tey Seu Bock, Rashid Sidek, Jeremy Gan, Tan Kim Her and Pang Cheh Chiang as well as NSI's Col (R) Wong Ah Jit.

"My idea of hosting this lunch is to meet the media and also to thank them for all your support towards badminton. Let us all work together to ensure that Malaysian badminton delivers the desired results at London. We as players and officials cannot do it alone and need the support of the media. You all have been wonderful all these years and I thank you from the bottom of my heart for all the positive reports and hope you continue to support Malaysian badminton," said Chong Wei in paying tribute to the Malaysian media.

Judge walks out as questions turn personal

"ATTACK" seemed to be the mode of the day at the Intellectual Property High Court here, against defence witnesses called to testify in the "tiger stripe" design case between the National Sports Council (NSC) and Mesuma Sports Sdn Bhd.

NSC lawyer Datuk Mohamed Bustaman Abdullah did not mince his words in cross-examining Olympic Council Malaysia (OCM) honorary secretary Datuk Sieh Kok Chi, even when the subject zoomed in on Sieh's disabled daughter, making those present at the court, including judge Datuk Hanipah Farukillah, squirm in discomfort.

Mohamed Bustaman asked Sieh, the third defence witness, why his disabled daughter often travelled with him to foreign countries as a council board member when she was not one.

To this, Sieh, who maintained a calm composure, said that as a board member, he was entitled to bring a guest whenever he travelled overseas.

"I am a single parent and my daughter is handicapped. There is no one to take care of her and as such, she travels with me," said Siah, 74.

He said he paid for her expenses, including her flight tickets.

Mohamed Bustaman then asked Sieh whether he knew pregnant shooter Nur Suryani Mohd Taibi, who came into the limelight recently when she wanted her husband Marhazli Mohtar to accompany her to the London Olympics instead of national rifle coach Saidov Isroil.

Sieh said he knew her and her request after reading reports in the newspapers.

Mohamed Bustaman linked Nur Suryani's case to Sieh's by asking him why Marhazli was not allowed to follow his wife overseas whereas Sieh's daughter could do so.

Judge Datuk Hanipah Farukillah then asked Mohamed Bustaman to move on with other questions, but he persisted with it.

Out of the blue, Hanipah, who looked angry, walked out of the court room without uttering a word.

When the proceedings resumed five minutes later, Mohamed Bustaman apologised to both Hanipah and Sieh.

"Please use proper phrases when putting questions to the witness and try not to indicate that the government is the owner of the design," Hanipah said.

SUB JUDICE?

This has got to be a first, having spoken to various legal minds after having been sent a copy of the email below. Now what on earth was the NSC trying to do? Create a scenario at the courthouse or an attempt to gain cheap publicity?

So was the invite sent in order for the DG of NSC to hold a press conference after trestifying? Am sure even the DG knows better than doing that.

CHONG WEI OPTIMISTIC

Having kept his silence for the past three weeks since suffering the horrific ankle injury at the Thomas Cup. Lee Chong Wei opened up to theMalaysian media when he faced a barrage of questions at the Stadium Juara after training and physiotherapy.

Utmost on the mind of the media was his recovery and his state of preparation for the Olympics, which will commence in five weeks time.

"It has been a harrowing time ever since I suffered the injury. The first thing on my mind was there goes my Olympic dream. I realized that in order to play and perform at the Olympics I would need somewhat a miracle plus dedication and determination to overcome my predicament," said Chong Wei.

"In a way I am blessed that so many Malaysians prayed and offered encouragement to me and for that I am grateful as the messages of support and even offers to treat me kept pouring in.

"I have been concentrating on getting the ankle better through various conditioning training and I admit that it is still painful especially movement on the court.

"I have started court training last week but not at full pace, that is something I expect to do next week. But work on my endurance has commenced and I do track training under the supervision of my Physio and coach."

Chong Wei added that he was looking forward to the training stint in Bath University as that will allow him to fully focus on his preparation for the London Olympics.

On the change of format adopted by the World Badminton Federation, where the singles competition will see players playing in group matches before proceeding to the knock-out stage, Chong Wei had this to say;

"This is my third Olympic and I find it strange that a change of format was introduced. Having said that I guess it is fortunate since I suffered this injury and the group matches will allow me to gauge my condition and allow me to get used to the conditions."

BAM AND NADZMI

Lifted from Utusan Malaysia, an editorial comment by Awang Selamat.

BAM and Nadzmi

The barrage of criticism by various quarters on the leadership of the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) has attracted public interest.

This follows the failure of the Malaysian badminton team to surpass the quarter final of Thomas Cup in Wuhan, China, recently. This is the second time that Malaysia failed to break the barrier of the quarter final after the black history of 2004.

Among the criticism hurled at BAM is the failure to create many stars and being too dependent on Lee Chong Wei, as well as the weakness in planning.

Also criticising BAM is former national champion, Cheah Soon Kit, who is coach to the team of teenage players. He said that the association has always given archaic answer every time it fails to make any mark.

His conclusion: BAM is only focusing on its preparation for Thomas Cup whereas the reality is that there are many weaknesses that must be overcome.

Former BAM President, Elyas Omar is more hitting in his comment. He said BAM need drastic change and major reshuffle. “If I hold the helm of the association for 12 years and did not achieve anything, then it is a problem,” he said.

Awang is also puzzle over the direction of BAM. After 20 years, Malaysia still fail to bring back the Thomas Cup home since the last time it did so in 1992 under the stewardship of Elyas.

Today, Malaysia’s ranking in the world dropped to sixth position. The achievement of countries which have no excellent record in the sport like Japan and Thailand, are rising.

Malaysia, which is among the top world power house of badminton in the 1960s and early 1990s, has failed to rise. BAM should not allow the sport to face the same fate as sepaktakraw. Act before it is too late.

Awang believes that BAM President, Mohd Nadzmi Mohd Salleh who holds the position since 2000, get a clear message. Awang agree with Elyas that Nadzmi should make way for others.

He should not feel that his reputation is at stake by allowing others to take over BAM leadership.

Although the move is no guarantee of providing total solution, change must start somewhere especially at the leadership level. We should inculcate the culture of accountability including in sports body. While Awang recognise the big contribution of Nadzmi to the sports of badminton, he should also be realistic and read the voices of the majority. In life, a time will come when our era is gone. That’s how life is.

FORCES CHAMPS

ARMED FORCES ARE CHAMPS

Armed Forces lifted the Raja Noora Ashikin Cup for the first time in the history of the competition when they defeated Malacca 3-0 in the final at the Seremban 2 Hockey Stadium.
It was a final that pitted the experience of the Armed Forces against the youthful exuberance of the Malacca side, who were a last minute entry into the tournament.

GIVE ME SPACE - CHONG WEI

World number one Lee Chong Wei  has asked for some privacy and compassion as he deals with matters concerning his family.

This blogger contacted him after reading the Bernama story below and an emotional Chong Wei was frank as he sought for advice.

"How and what can I say to those who are calling me? My brother has gone to Penang to get more details. Really it is a family issue and I am not sure what made my father do this. I hope the media will understand that this is a family matter and I seek their compassion and understanding as my family deals with this matter," was Chong Wei's request to the media that he asked this blog to convey."

We understand the plight of Chong Wei and hope the rest of the mainstream media does as well as we pray that the family best handles the situation and we give Chong Wei the space he desires.

BUKIT MERTAJAM, June 10 (Bernama) -- Police today foiled two attempts at suicide by the father of a national athlete, including at the Penang Bridge.

The 59-year-old man is said to have tried to take his life near the Queensbay shopping mall in Bayan Lepas early today but was foiled by the police who coaxed him out of the attempt.

Seberang Perai Tengah (SPT) police chief ACP Azman Abd Lah said police were notified of a man crying by the sea near the mall at about 4 am.

"A patrol team was sent there and coaxed him to return home. Our men took about three hours to coax him to return home," he said when contacted by Bernama.

The patrol car also tailed the man who was driving his own car, he said

ELYAS SLAMS BAM

Former Badminton Association President Tan Sri Elyas Omar has taken the BAM and its leadership to task following the various excuses dished out by the national body following the Thomas Cup failures. Hopefully the main stream media will write what Elyas said when met at the OCM this evening.

Amongst what Elyas asked was:

- what happened to the 1001 courts program?

- whatever has happened to the BAM Academy, the land and assets?

- that accountability is an alien word to BAM leadership

- If Nadzmi claims BAM has money, then what has he to show for results?

- that BAM especially has snubbed his offer to help since 2002?

- that curreny BAM officials have no inkling how to win the Thomas Cup

And the list goes on and on.....
